“Does being immortal make you really good at math?” Todd spoke in a loud hush that could be heard through the entirety of the school library.

Sometime, probably over twenty years earlier, the study space had been decked out with posters of famous people encouraging reading and connections between early video games and books. Although the card catalogue vanished with the upgrade of computer book inventories, the library looked very much like it must have for decades, save for collected dust and tears.

I barely glanced up from the books and papers spread between him and me. “I guess it could because there’s more time to practice.”

“Want to do my math homework?”

“You only have a finite number of years alive. Use some of that time developing needed survival skills.”

“Huh?”

“Do your own damn homework.”

He started to fake cry then pointed to one of the many posters on the walls featuring celebrities reading. “Fine. But know that young Cindy Crawford is very disappointed in you.”

At his comment, I glanced up at the photo of the model dressed down in high waist jeans popular of the early 90s and sitting at a makeup table holding a book. The word “read” had been printed over her head.

“It might be time for the school to get some new artwork.”

Alondra and Bev sat down at our table, both looking exhausted as they unloaded their own unfinished (mostly likely due in an hour) homework. “Why are you in here so early?” Bev wanted to know as she rested her head on the table.

“Research project due in science.”

Todd slid a textbook toward the pair with hope. “Will one of you do my math homework?” Both of them scoffed and he hopped away with the book in hand. “Fine. But none of you are getting into my house of style when I’m famous!”

He stormed past the shelves of books and bay of computers. He stopped at the librarian’s desk near the door, distracting her from her list of overdue items. We couldn’t hear their conversation, but we could see him waving the textbook in front of the woman who then pointed a single finger at the door. Todd carried his pout out of the library.

I stretched a little, enjoying the stillness. Mirror wasn't even talking. I had yelled at her earlier and accused her of butting into my business. She hadn't said a word since. I hadn't even taken her from my pocket since that conversation.

Lately, I had been finding less time to just sit in my apartment and do nothing. School and helping Carter "fight the forces of darkness" kept me occupied. In the last few weeks, he’d experienced minor supernatural inconveniences and he dealt with each as an individual case. Some part of me couldn’t help appreciating that he knew, just like people, the creatures of other worlds refused to be classified as straightforward good or evil. However, as luck would have it, most beings he encountered fell into the latter category.
